Apartheid, the South African government’s policy of racial segregation, ended fourteen years ago. Although South Africa holds a tragic place in the American political consciousness due to the
AIDS crisis, not much attention is paid to the nation’s efforts to recover and rebuild after decades of prejudice and cruelty. In the summer of 2006,
Grey Matters Media traveled to
South Africa to listen to the stories of the first generation to come of age in a country liberated from oppression and injustice. The images we capture will bear witness to their goals, concerns, and hopes for the future. Our documentary will be a testament to a people learning to see life not through the lenses of black and white, a people creating a place for themselves in the grey.
